Thank you for your interest in serving on the AEP Board of Directors.
Serving on the Board of Directors of a nonprofit organization can be one
of the most important, influential, and satisfying experiences of your life.
Please review the following information. We hope that you will submit an
application using our online board application form. Persons with legal, management,
accounting, marketing and education expertise are encouraged to apply.
Duty of the AEP Board of Directors
The Board of Directors will be involved in creating policies,
developing plans and devising operation strategies for AEP. The Board is
charged with the responsibility to govern the organization. Board members
are expected to take an active role in supporting the organization’s
fundraising efforts. Board members are not required to be involved in
the day-to-day activities of AEP. The Executive Director and the
appropriate staff attend to these duties. The Executive Director is
accountable to the Board of Directors. The AEP Directors are governed by the AEP bylaws.
Time Commitment
Serving on the AEP Board will require a commitment of your time, skills
and resources. The AEP Board of Directors meet twice a year, once in March or April for a short meeting (usually 9AM-1PM) and once in October or November for a Board retreat (Friday evening to Saturday evening). AEP Board members volunteer on average 10 hours per month and many committ more hours to AEP depending on activities. The group maintains constant contact over email as well.
The next Board Retreat is scheduled for April 2006 (exact date to be determined) in the Triangle area of North Carolina (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill). The Board will meet for dinner on Friday night. The second day will be spent working from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM.
It is paramount that every new Board member attend the
April meeting.
Service Terms
Since these are the early years of AEP, service terms are for two years. Beginning on January 1, 2007, service terms will be one year. Board members can run for re-election.
Compensation
Board appointments are strictly voluntary. Expenses incurred through
select AEP-related activities are reimbursable.
Application Deadline
We ask that all applications be submitted by April 1, 2006.
